Our Story
West Virginia Horse Network, INC. was founded in October 2014 to help ensure the welfare of horses in the Mountain State.
The idea to start WVHN was sparked when the people who would soon make up the membership of West Virginia Horse Network, INC., rallied passionately around a senior horse in need. In December 2014 we were officially recognized as a federal 501(c)3 tax exempt organization. We worked privately during those months to build WVHN. We officially launched to the public in January 2015. Since then we have rescued hundreds of horses, provided education to the community, built a safety net program and developed strong partnerships with other rescue organizations to help maximize our impact.
Our Mission
West Virginia Horse Network, INC. is committed to making a difference for horses. We focus on non-judgemental, conversation based adoptions. We also help owners who want the best for their horses by providing judgement free short term assistance or by accepting their horses into our program when they are unable to provide long term care.

At WVHN we are committed to helping the horses that WE have the most to offer. We may not be the largest rescue in the Mountain State however we do have a meaningful place in helping horses who may otherwise fall through the cracks. We generally have no more than 20 horses in our care at any given time. We believe that quality of care should always come before quantity.
We love helping all horses but we put a priority on senior horses and horses who may not be rideable and would have the best future as a “companion” horse. We also find that our adopter base is always looking for mini horses and ponies, so we welcome them as well.
You could say that our rescue has a talent for seeing the BEST in every horse even if they aren’t young and rideable. We also see the BEST in our adopters. We are not judgemental and we do our best to help adopters make their dreams of adoption come true while still putting a priority on the safety of the horses. Sometimes that means coaching first time adopters, connecting adopters with trainers and other similar steps. If you want to have a reasonable and pleasant experience, you have come to the right place.
WVHN will not take on more horses than we can handle financially and will not take horses who are feral, because that is not our focus. We spend one on one time with each and every horse, to make sure their nutritional, emotional, medical and training needs are being served. We are able to have the biggest impact by working with a network of foster homes. Our volunteers form relationships with each horse. We feed their spirit, mind and body. We euthanize horses when our veterinarian recommends that we do so because of quality of life concerns.
West Virginia Horse Network is committed to community leadership and education. We believe that by actively educating current and future horse owners about proper horse care we can help prevent horses from needing rescue in the first place. An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. We also believe that by participating in and volunteering for community events that promote responsible horse ownership we can help change the culture and standards when it comes to the treatment of horses.
We believe in helping horses stay with their owners whenever that option is safe and appropriate. For this reason we developed a “safety net” program that we call STAI: Solutions to Avoid Intake. Through this program we provide temporary assistance to loving horse owners who have fallen on hard times.
WVHN has developed a reputation nationally for being enthusiastic about horse adoption in general…promoting not just OUR horses but the idea of adoption in general. We are humble, modest and focused on the HORSES. We have a robust and active partnership with the ASPCA Right Horse and other rescues across the country.
