Redefining the Essence of Horsemanship

Redefining the essence of horsemanship involves reexamining and reshaping our understanding of the relationship between humans and horses. Traditionally, horsemanship has been viewed primarily as a set of skills focused on riding, handling, and training. However, the West Virginia Horse Network perspective emphasizes a deeper connection that goes beyond physical abilities.

At its core, this redefinition highlights the importance of empathy, communication, and partnership. It recognizes that successful horsemanship is not only about control or dominance but about building trust and understanding between horse and rider. This approach fosters a more holistic view, where the emotional and psychological needs of the horse are more valued. As a horse rescue that often welcomes companion-only horses, we are committed to providing each horse a loving home where they are appreciated in every aspect and can reach their full potential. We aim to shift away from the notion that a horse's worth is solely determined by its ability to carry a rider.

What is a Companion Horse?

A companion horse is one that typically provides friendship and support to other animals or humans. These horses are essential as they offer social interaction, alleviate stress, and create a feeling of safety. Companion horses significantly enhance the emotional and psychological well-being of their partners, nurturing strong and rewarding relationships that improve the overall quality of life for all involved. Companion horses frequently go unnoticed due to their lack of riding ability or engagement in typical equestrian activities. However, many of these horses excel in in-hand obstacles, liberty training, redefining the essence of horsemanship, and forming deep emotional connections.

Riding-Potential Horses

What is a Riding-Potential Horse?

We categorize "riding-potential" horses as those that could be trained to be ridden in the future. These horses might already be trained but require a refresher, are green broke, or are not yet broke but show the potential to be. They often possess qualities such as a calm demeanor, willingness to learn, and physical attributes suitable for riding. Each horse is evaluated individually, ensuring that their unique strengths and needs are recognized and addressed.

What is a Golden Day Club Horse?

The purpose of this program is to allow horses to enjoy their “golden years” with wonderful adopters. By adopting through this program equine caregivers will be able to receive an annual tax receipt for the cost of providing care to the animal. WVHN horses listed as “Golden Day Club Program Eligible” are entirely or mostly rehabilitated horses seeking forever homes. Horses in this program are either senior or occasionally younger horses that require special treatment and attention due to an ongoing medical condition. Not ALL senior horses will be designated as eligible for this program. Please look for the GDCP logo or ask our Adoption Team for a list of eligible horses. Horses designated as GDCP eligible are also available for standard adoptions.
